Google Keyboard Shortcuts - Provides Easy Google Interface

Keyboard shortcuts give greater efficiency by not having to lift our hands from the keyboard to use the mouse. The only problem is remembering all of them. If you use Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Contacts or Google Reader, the single most important keyboard shortcut to remember is the question mark ("?").

In the Google services mentioned above, hitting "Shift+?" will bring up a grid of all the keyboard shortcuts that are available for that service. Clicking on the "Open in a new window" link will display the shortcuts in a new browser window so that you can save them.

Here's what they look like:

Gmail

Google Contacts

Google Calender

Google Reader

You're not likely to remember each and every shortcut, but with some practice, you could at least remember few of the important one's. For when you can't remember them, however, there's always the "?"

Facebook Introduces "Timeline" - Showing All Your Important Content on One Page

Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced a new profile feature called “Timeline” that lets a user’s friends see their most important content from their entire time on Facebook. Available on both the web and mobile versions of the site, Timeline can be filtered to show just recent content, content from the last year, or from multiple years all on one page. Users can set a big banner image to appear at the top of their Timeline, and expand or remove panels of content they want to feature or hide.

Users will also be able to use apps to generate “Reports” of specific types of content such as all the meals they’ve cooked. There are also new types of updates users can publish specifically for major life events such as getting a new pet, starting a relationship, or moving to a new city. Timeline will make the profile a much more engaging place and likely increase the amount of time users spend there.

Facebook will automatically choose content to show in Timeline based on Likes, comments, and other signals. To edit the Timeline, users can scroll through see hidden updates or look through a private activity log. They can then choose to make certain updates visible to friends in the Timeline.

To allow users to add media and lifestyle content to the Timeline and also the home page Ticker, a new class of Open Graph apps is also being launched. Users will grant permissions to the apps and they will then automatically publish activity to the Timeline and Ticker. Zuckerberg calls this a “frictionless experience”, as users don’t have to constantly fill out sharing prompts.

The Timeline also features tabs for music, video, and other content types. Here users can view a collection of all the content of a certain type that a friend has consumed. The music tab will show all the songs a user has listened to and playlists they’ve published, while the video tab will show a user’s most watched film and their recently watched TV show episodes.

The feature will begin rolling out to the public over the next few weeks, but developers can sign up for early access now. Here's how you can get it too:

1. Visit the Facebook Developer page and enable it for your account.

2. Click the 'Create New App' button on the top right. On the New App prompt window, give your app a display name and name space -- any name, it doesn't matter. Agree to the Platform Privacy Policy and click Continue. You will need a verified Facebook account so make sure you have either a credit card or phone number on file.

3. After clearing the CAPTCHA verification you will then be taken to your new apps' settings screen (if Facebook doesn’t put you there automatically hit the Edit App button on the top right). Next, click on Open Graph link in the left column and define an action for your new app on the right pane. You can enter whatever you like; I wrote watch on the first field and chose video from the drop-down menu on the next one. Click "Get Started."

That's it! You may or may not see an error telling you that something went wrong but just ignore that and head to your Facebook homepage after waiting for few minutes, you should see an invitation to the new Facebook Timeline Beta. Once you are in you can take a short tour of the new timeline view or start editing your profile until you are ready to publish it.
The timeline functionality isn't compatible with the "old" Facebook, so most of your friends won't see your fancy new page just yet. Users will be migrated over the coming weeks as Facebook rolls out the update to everyone.

The top portion of the timeline features a configurable background picture called the Cover,
and has personal information on the left along with your friends, photos, and Likes.

Gmail Mobile New Features: Multiple Account Sign-In, Vacation Auto-Responder

Work and personal emails can finally co-exist on Gmail: Google has finally rolled out its much anticipated multiple account sign-in feature for Gmail via mobile browser. They've also released two other features for good measure.

These new features were official announced on Gmail blog. Mobile Software Engineer Dominic Leung trumpeted the new feature as being "just like on your desktop," and from the looks of it, multiple sign-in for mobile will work exactly the same: Users will click on their usernames at the bottom of their Gmail inboxes and have the option to log in to different Gmail accounts from their mobile browser.

Ever forgotten to set your out-of-office auto-reply in Gmail before going on a trip? You don’t have to worry about that anymore, since you can now set your auto-reply using the mobile interface. Simply choose a start and end date and specify your message, just like on the desktop interface.

Google has been making news on the mobile front this week. It announced several new features including Video Hangouts for mobile on the Google+ app, and it also pushed through the official rollout of Google Wallet. GWallet is a mobile payment system that uses NFC technology, allowing owners to tap-and-pay for things using credit cards synced onto their cell phones. Though Google Wallet has caused some privacy and safety concerns, early reviews are generally positive.

Google+ Opens To All - Launches Search, Expanded Hangouts And More

Google+ is now open to anyone who wants to get in.

In a Tuesday post on the Official Google Blog, Google announced that it is launching nine new features, including open signups.

"For the past 12 weeks we've been in field trial, and during that time we've listened and learned a great deal. We're nowhere near done, but with the improvements we've made so far we're ready to move from field trial to beta, and introduce our 100th feature: open signups. This way anyone can visit google.com/+, join the project and connect with the people they care about," Senior Vice President of Engineering Vic Gundotra wrote for the blog post.

Google also launched Search for Google+, as well as an expansion of its Hangouts video chat feature and more.

Searching within Google+ will let users seek out other users, posts, and "popular content from around the web," the way they would using Google's search engine.

Google+ users will now be able to initiate Hangouts via Android 2.3 devices and higher. "iOS support is coming soon," Gundotra promised on the Google Blog. "On Air" broadcasts will let some users record live chat sessions that others can tune in to.

Google is also releasing "a basic set of Hangouts APIs" to developers, so expect some fun new Hangouts features soon. For now, Google lists its most recent Hangout updates on the Google Blog:

* Screensharing: for when you want to show off your vacation photos, your high score, your lesson plan or whatever else is on your screen
* Sketchpad: for when you want to draw, doodle, or just scribble together
* Google Docs: for when you want to write, plan or present something with others
* Named Hangouts: for when you want to join or create a public hangout about a certain topic (like fashion or music or sports...)

For the past three months, the social network has been in invite-only mode while Google continuously rolled out new features. Tuesday's features launched as the service moves from "field trial" into "beta."

In less than two months, Google+ exploded to 25 million members, making it the fastest-growing social network ever, according to comScore.

Google Wallet Now Available For Use - But Only For Some

Google has been opening up its wallet a lot lately, but now it is opening its Wallet with a capital W: that is, Google Wallet has officially launched.

In a post for the Google Blog, Google Vice President of Payments Osama Bedier officially announced the release of Google Wallet, the company's mobile, tap-and-go payment system. For now, the service will only be available on the Sprint Nexus S 4G, the most recent Google flagship phone. Nexus S owners should see the Wallet app appearing on their phone via over-the-air update and can start paying through their GWallet's Citi MasterCard or Google Prepaid Card very soon.

Google Wallet works using the nascent Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, which not all smartphones have been equipped for (sorry, iPhone owners). NFC-enabled devices can transmit small amounts of data simply by being in close proximity with another NFC-enabled device; the technology has been heralded for its convenience and safety and is expected by some to become the standard for all payments in the future.

The "Wave and Pay" method of payment was unveiled as a feature of upcoming Windows 8 phones and has long been rumored as a feature to the iPhone 5, and though only the Citi MasterCard is currently available in Google Wallet, the company's blog post on Monday indicated that support for Visa, Discover and American Express could be right around the corner. A full list of smartphones with NFC capability is available here.

Google Wallet currently works wherever the MasterCard bump-and-pay PayPass is accepted.

Adjust the Frequency of Facebook Email Alerts

Few days back, Facebook sent an Email to all its users mentioning that from now on, it'll send less number of Email notifications to its users. Seems counterproductive, doesn't it? Facebook had already rolled out this new feature few days back, that limits the e-mail frequency of alerts to a summary of popular stories.

Every single user is aware of the pain of receiving excessive e-mail alerts all too well, because of which most of the users are bound to set separate Facebook filters in their email accounts. But, for some users, the old e-mail alert system is what works best and what they are used to - and what they ultimately prefer. With that in mind, we are going to show you how to control the number of notifications you get on your email account.

Follow these Simple Steps:
1. Login to your Facebook account, and navigate to your Account Settings, located under the Account drop-down list.

2. In the left column, click on Notifications.

3. Uncheck the box located under the "Email Frequency" section. Once the box is unchecked, you will resume receiving individual e-mails based on your notification settings.

But if you have finally made up your mind and you don't want to receive individual alerts anymore, navigate back to the same Notifications section and check the box.

While still in the Notifications Settings page, and with the e-mail frequency feature turned off, you will have the ability to edit notifications actions. To do so, while viewing the list of the different categories, click on Edit to select which items you would like an e-mail alert for.

Keep in mind, if you opted to leave the e-mail frequency feature enabled, you will not be able to edit this section of your notification settings.

Facebook's New "Subscribe" Button

Facebook is constantly rolling out its new features in order to contend with its rival "Google Plus". On September 14, 2011 Facebook has introduced its new feature which allows users to "Subscribe" to another user's updates.

In its official blog, Facebook announced that it would begin rolling out the "Subscribe" button, a tool that offers users a new way to interact with one another.

Naomi Gleit, Facebook's director of product said: "Our mission is to connect people and help them share. The goal of this new feature really is to give people more control over how they do that."

The new "Subscribe" button lets Facebook operate more like Twitter by enabling people to "follow" public figures or other users.

How to Enable "Subscribe" Button:
Facebook users can enable "Subscribe" button on their profile by visiting Facebook's subscription page, then clicking "Allow subscriptions" (Perhaps as a sign of how it anticipates its users employing the new tool, Facebook specifically called out "journalists, artists and political figures" as potential users of the "subscribe" button)

After enabling Facebook's "Subscribe" feature, users will be allowed to edit their Subscriber Settings which will allow them to toggle "Comments" and "Notifications."

Once you've approved "Subscriptions" the "Subscribe" button will appear on your profile to the left of the "Message" button.

Do tell us what you think of the new feature in the comments below.

Facebook Will Be Sending You Less Email

Starting today, Facebook will turning off most individual email notifications and instead, they will send you a summary only if there are popular stories you may have missed.
Facebook is testing a new type of e-mail notification that summarize all profile activity for users who currently generate a large number of notification e-mails. The social networking giant clearly hopes to reduce the inbox clutter it is causing for some of its members by cutting down on the number of emails it sends out.

[Learn How to Adjust the Frequency of Facebook Email Alerts]
Instead of getting an e-mail for every new notification you receive on Facebook, you’ll just get a summary e-mail every so often. Here is how the company describes the new Email Frequency feature on an email sending to users:
Hi,
We’re trying out a new feature to reduce the amount of email you receive from Facebook. Starting today, we are turning off most individual email notifications and instead, we’ll send you a summary only if there are popular stories you may have missed.
You can turn individual emails back on and restore all your original settings at any time.
Thanks,
The Facebook Team

Facebook Unveils "Smart Lists" - Auto Grouping Friends into Smart Lists

Does Facebook really know everything about your social connections? Yes it does!! Suppose you've got around 500 friends on Facebook profile, and suppose you went to school with 'A' and 'B', you’ve worked with 'C' for years, and 'D' lives just down the block. Facebook knows everything - but it haven't revealed anything about it, until now!!

Facebook has finally rolled out its new feature named “Smart Lists” to select users - which intelligently groups certain obvious groups of friends into lists based on certain criteria. Take that, Google Plus! "Smart Lists" will be released in the next few weeks.

This new feature is Facebook's response to rival Google Plus, which protects users privacy in "Circles" to allow users to group friends and more closely control who sees their posts.

Under this feature, Facebook will automatically group your friends into three different categories:
* People you work with
* People you attended school with
* People who live within 50 miles of you

If nothing else, that last one should be pretty handy when you'll be updating your status with clichés like “Oh my God! Earthquake! Did anyone else feel that!” so as not to bug the people on other side of the world who obviously didn’t felt it.

Users who are of the opinion - "It's just another moronic update", can opt out of this new feature just like with other Facebook features. But Facebook users who have several lists of contacts may appreciate having more control over who sees their posts.

Facebook haven't announced any particular date for the release of "Smart Lists". But when this new feature will be available to general public, it will help Facebook to retain its users who considered switching over to Google Plus to get more privacy options.

The iPhone 5 Will Have A 4-Inch Screen!

According to new renderings commissioned by the folks at MacRumors, the iPhone 5 will have a display screen that is 4 inches or a little bit larger, an upgrade from the 3.5-inch iPhone 4. These renderings are based on what is purportedly a leak of case design information for the new phone. If MacRumors' renderings are correct, the new iPhone would not only have a bigger display screen, it would also be a larger device compared to the iPhone 4 in general, in terms of height and width (though it would be much thinner). MacRumors also purchased what is apparently an iPhone 5 case, so click over to MacRumors for shots of the iPhone 4 inside of that purported iPhone 5 case, if that's your sort of thing. And hey, while we're speculating about all things iPhone 5, why not talk about the device's release date, based on--no, not evidence from Apple--but rather the suspicious fact that...

The loose-knit group Anonymous which claims responsibility for a number of politically-motivated online attacks has made a tool available for download which takes over Twitter trending topics and lets users post messages within them. A report in Cnet says the beta software called U.R.G.E. (Universal Rapid Gamma Emitter), is for Windows and requires .Net Framework 4 to work.

The Anonymous group said in a statement that "This is not a hacking tool nor is it an exploit tool. It was created to make it easier for us to tweet faster without copying and pasting constantly."
Anonymous members say they are annoyed with all the redundant and "pop culture" topics featured on Twitter Trends and want to draw more attention to topics that "actually serve a cause."
